Dr. Giorgio Roscigno Takes Up Diagnostics Challenge

June 9, 2003

Common Cause: Drugs & Diagnostics

The quest for new tools against tuberculosis received a boost in May, with the creation of the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND). FIND is aiming its sights on TB first with Dr. Giorgio Roscigno at the helm and Dr. Mark Perkins formerly of TDR, as its Scientific Director.

Dr. Roscigno formerly led strategic development activities at the TB Alliance and notes the common cause: “The more we share intelligence on how to disarm the bacterium, the better it is for TB patients. I anticipate close ties with the Alliance.” The TB Alliance congratulates Dr. Roscigno on his new position and looks forward to an institutional partnership.

The TB Alliance congratulates Dr. Roscigno on his new position at FIND, and looks forward to extending its past collaboration with Giorgio into a new institutional partnership.

"We are delighted to welcome this new diagnostics initiative," said Dr. Maria Freire. “As diagnostics and drugs go hand-in-hand, TB control efforts are sure to get a real boost."

FIND, a non-profit research foundation, was launched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), a TB Alliance Stakeholder. Dr. Mark Perkins, formerly of the World Health Organization and noted diagnostic expert, will be the Scientific Director.
