Global health leader brings deep expertise in advancing children’s health, HIV, and global health equity
NEW YORK (March 2, 2026)—TB Alliance, a not-for-profit organization committed to developing better, faster, and affordable treatments for tuberculosis (TB), today announced that its Global TB Stakeholders group has elected Dr. Doris Macharia, President of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), as its new president. In this role, Dr. Macharia will also serve as a member of TB Alliance’s Board of Directors.
Dr. Macharia brings more than 25 years of global health leadership experience spanning program design, implementation, evaluation, and strategic partnerships across Africa and globally. Her career began in Kenya at the height of the HIV epidemic, where she worked as a physician in Nairobi hospitals when antiretroviral therapies were not yet available and treatment options were limited.
Since then, she has designed and led programs reaching people in more than 20 countries, including South Africa, with a strong focus on advancing equitable access to care for children, families, and communities most affected by infectious diseases, particularly HIV. As President of EGPAF, she leads global strategies to end pediatric HIV while strengthening health systems and partnerships in high-burden settings. Tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death among people living with HIV.
“I am honored to serve as president of the Global TB Stakeholders and to join the TB Alliance Board of Directors,” said Dr. Macharia. “TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, and its close intersection with HIV—particularly among children and vulnerable populations—makes this work both urgent and deeply personal. I look forward to working with partners across sectors to help accelerate progress toward ending TB.”
TB Alliance’s Global TB Stakeholders is an advisory body composed of representatives from TB-affected communities, governments, non-governmental organizations, academia, foundations, and industry. The stakeholders play a critical role in providing guidance and insight to TB Alliance leadership, helping align the organization’s strategic direction with the broader TB and global development fields and ensuring that the perspectives of those most affected by TB inform decision-making.
“Ending TB requires listening to and working closely with communities and partners to translate shared priorities into action and impact,” said Dr. Mel Spigelman, President and CEO of TB Alliance. “Doris is an exceptional leader who has consistently prioritized community, collaboration and impact in all her work. We are excited to have her help guide and elevate the voice of our stakeholders.”
As president of the Global TB Stakeholders, Dr. Macharia will serve a three-year term, helping to strengthen engagement across the varied and global groups that comprise TB Alliance’s Global TB Stakeholder community, elevating and communicating the perspectives of those allied in fighting TB and those most affected by TB.
“Dr. Macharia is a respected global health leader with a proven record of advancing collaboration and equitable impact across complex health challenges,” said David Norton, Chair of the TB Alliance Board of Directors. “Her leadership at the forefront of global HIV and pediatric health brings a critical and complementary perspective to TB Alliance’s work. Her experience building strong partnerships will strengthen our group of Stakeholders and Board of Directors as we continue to advance innovation and access in TB care.”
