On March 24, 2011, the Delft CAB coordinated an event at the local Delft Community Health Center, gathering approximately 1,000 people from Delft. Speeches were given by several CAB members, former TB patients, and health care workers sharing their TB-related experiences.
A former MDR-TB patient shared his experience and the challenges associated with the treatment, wishing it was much shorter. "Aunty May," a community health worker, CAB member, and treatment support supervisor working with MaAfrika Tikun, shared her experiences of working with TB patients for 15 years, helping to find defaulters and counseling them to resume treatment. Auntie May also introduced a medical doctor who she had identified as having TB. The doctor shared her own experience with having TB, and by opening up to the audience helped to fight TB stigma.
The CAB talked with community members about the REMox TB trial and the role of the CAB in Delft. They also conducted a TB facts Q&A competition, awarding small gifts to those who answered correctly. Questions were asked about TB, duration of treatment, stigma, signs and symptoms and the history of TB drug development. A drama workshop was then conducted by Gill Black, a member of the Sustainable Livelihood Foundation.
World TB Day events were coordinated in partnership with TASK Applied Sciences, the Delft Community Advisory Board, Ma Afrika Tikun, the Delft Community Health Center, the Department of Health, the Delft Youth Forum and local artists and actors from Delft. It was the first time in Delft that youth participated in a World TB Day program.
