Organization Mission & Design Outlined at Cape Town, South Africa

February 7, 2000

Some 120 representatives from academia, industry, major agencies, non-governmental organizations and donors gathered in Cape Town to explore need for new drugs to improve tuberculosis treatment and control.

The idea of the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development was developed as a means to meet the need for new TB drugs given the unprecedented scientific opportunities and the economic rationale for developing new, fast acting TB treatments.

The resulting "Declaration of Cape Town for New TB Drugs" provides a road map for TB drug development and signatory institutions enrolled as Stakeholders of the new public-private partnership.
